BOW VALLEY LITERACY PROJECT

Need help reading and writing? A Volunteer Tutor can meet weekly with you. Call us:

  • Banff Public Library, 762-2661
  • Canmore Public Library, 678-2468

What is one-to-one tutoring?
Most volunteers find that one-to-one tutoring is a very rewarding experience. They have the satisfaction of helping someone to read and write - as well as sharing self-respect and a greater understanding of the world. Volunteer tutors meet weekly with their learners at a mutually agreed upon place and time, usually at the library.

Who are the learners?
Literacy/ESL (English as a Second Language) learners can be parents, employees, retirees, new Canadians . . . All of these learners have in common a desire to learn and a commitment to reach their learning goals

What is the time commitment?
Volunteer tutors meet weekly with their learning partners for 1 - 2 hour lessons. Volunteers are asked to attend monthly meetings, and to make a minimum 3 month commitment to help.

What are the qualifications for being a volunteer tutor?

All you need is time, an interest in reading, and a desire to help. You will receive training, materials, and other types of support.

What do we achieve?

  • Parents can read to their children
  • Parents can support and assist a child having "reading problems" at school
  • Consumers can follow directions in product manuals
  • Learners can pass the written Driver's Licence test
  • New Canadians can become Canadian Citizens
Many participants have acquired the skills they need to get and keep good jobs, support their families, and share the joy that reading brings.
