LOCATION: Y BAR
GENRE: Fantasy
RATED: *** Fantastic

Bored of Chickentown, Minnesota, Candy Quackenbush wishes for something
more; something more… exciting. Does she ever get her wish when
a man with eight heads shows up from out of nowhere! Before she knows
what is going on, Candy is whisked away to the fantastical world of Abarat.
It’s great fun to read about Candy’s epic adventure as she
moves through the assorted islands that make up this strange place, which
is full of bizarre creatures and customs. One of the most interesting
things about the book is the artwork throughout that illustrates Abarat’s
rich scenery. Candy faces a lot of tough challenges and decisions in her
travels, which makes for great reading!
Akhenaten Adventure -

GENRE: Fantasy

This story is a creative spin on the enchanted lamp theme (like Aladdin).
Philippa and John, 12 year old twins, live a privileged but uneventful
life in New York City… until they get their wisdom teeth extracted. Nothing
special, right? Well, suddenly, they have the ability to grant wishes!
Only a long-lost uncle can explain what’s going on and teach them how
to use and control their power. So, the twins travel to Cairo with their
uncle when he begins their training as djinn. They learn things like:
do you spin clockwise or counter-clockwise when spiraling into your genie
bottle? It’s so hard to remember! Of course, to keep the action moving,
their uncle needs the twins’ help to save the fragile balance between
quarrelling genie tribes. This is the first book in the Children of the
Lamp series.

This is one of my all-time favourite series! It's been around longer than
Harry Potter and is really worth giving a try. Magic crows, time travel,
and Arthurian legend mix with contemporary life in a tale about a boy
who just might be the only person who can stop the dark forces from taking
over the world... Sound familiar?! I think J. K. Rowling read this when
she was a teen and got some good ideas! The first book in the series is
Over Sea, Under Stone.
Dragon Slippers -
George, Jessica Day
AGE: 12-15
LOCATION: J GEO
GENRE: Fantasy
RATED: *** Fantastic
REVIEWER: Michael B., Grade 6 student
Dragons collect slippers? You expect dragons to be blood thirsty creatures, right? Wrong. Creel is a girl who lives in the town of Carlieff. Her mother wants her to get captured by a dragon so a prince will rescue her and increase the family fortune. As Creel meets a dragon which collects shoes, she makes a deal for any pair. She finds the only ones that fit which are very special. Then she runs to a nearby town to find a job. There she meets a spoiled princess who steals her shoes with a secret power. What will happen next?
I thought this was one of the best, well written books I have ever read. I recommend this book for anyone who likes exciting fantasy books. You might not like this book if you don’t like fun-filled action books.
Ella Enchanted -
Levine, Gail
AGE: 10-14
LOCATION: J LEV
GENRE: Fantasy / Fiction
RATED: ** Some magical moments.
REVIEWER: Tonya, Banff Public Library staff
At birth, Ella is cursed by Lucinda, a fairy who lacks foresight.
It wasn't meant to be a curse but she gave Ella the "gift"
of obedience -- which means Ella must obey everything she is told
to do. However, Ella is feisty. She says, "Instead of making
me docile, Lucinda's curse made a rebel of me. Or perhaps I was that
way naturally." When her dearly loved mother dies -- leaving
her in the care of an absent father and, later, a loathsome stepmother
and two treacherous stepsisters -- Ella's life seems to be in serious
danger.
But Ella is smart and her quick wit helps as she takes matters into
her own hands and sets out on a quest for freedom. While trying to
track down Lucinda so she can undo the curse, Ella finds herself fending
off ogres, befriending elves, and falling in love with a prince. Yes,
there is a pumpkin coach and a glass slipper... sound familiar?!

The Spiderwick Chronicles -

REVIEWER: Isaac, Teen Summer Reading Programme participant
This series is about three kids, Mallory, Simon and Jared Grace, who are
bored with the idea of moving into a new house. But… they find a
secret library and it changes their lives. I enjoyed these books because
there are magical creatures and really good descriptions. The kids go
on adventures together, showing teamwork and trust when they risk their
lives for each other. They need to find their Aunt Lucinda because she
is the only one who knows about the guidebook that they find in the library
which should tell them more about the magical creatures they discover
around the house. Towards the end of the series, elves send the kids to
defeat Mulgarath – the last book is better than fantastic! It shows
that family members will take chances and risks for each other.
The first book is the series is The Field Guide.

Tiffany, a young girl, is plunged into some entirely crazy mix with the Nac Mac Feegle
(small blue men with flaming red hair). Together, they run after the Queen of Fairie to
rescue Tiffany’s brother. After a crazy run-in with Dromes, Tiffany comes home the
victim rather than the hero. She then leaves on her next adventure in the sequel, A Hat
Full of Sky.
RATED: ***Fantastic!
REVIEWER: Tonya, Banff Public Library staff
This author is great at writing really funny books that can be down-right
ridiculous -- in a good way! So, imagine -- even if your younger brother
was an irritating pain in the butt -- if he was kidnapped by the evil
Queen of Fairie, you would head out to rescue him, right? Well, it's up
to 9 year old Tiffany to get her brother back safely after exactly that
happens. After Tiffany's quiet life of making cheese on her father's farm
is interrupted by monsters from Fairyland, she goes after the little brat
armed only with her courage, a frying pan, and the help of the crazy-talking
Nac Mac Feegle. Having already decided that she wants to be a witch when
she grows up, all Tiffany needs to do now is find her power -- oh, yeah
-- and her brother. Thank goodness the Nac Mac Feegle are such funny travelling
companions. Followed by A Hat Full of Sky.
